Great Course

Day skipper theory course was very good - well explained and clear. There was help on hand when needed but working it out for yourself was great instruction in itself! I would certainly do another course with Navathome and would recommend it to others.

Comprehensive course with helpful feedback

I recently took the Coastal/Yachtmaster theory course with Navathome, and happily I passed. There is a great deal of information to cover, and trying to fit this round a day job meant I needed an extension to the time to go through the course, but they kindly granted me this, and provided helpful and constructive feedback at every point. The exam itself probably needs several days, especially if you are as slow at plotting fixes as I am. Think of a number and double it is useful in terms of time needed. The final paper is really an all-day job, so make sure to allow yourself a clear block of time when you can drop everything else and give it your undivided attention. Overall, this has been a thoroughly enjoyable learning experience, and I now feel far more confident that I have decent knowledge to back up the practicalities of sailing.

Navathome Day Skipper Theory

Just completed and passed the RYA Day Skipper Theory course with Navathome. It was a really great experience and I was pleased to discover that I am still capable of learning lots of new things. The content is excellent at delivered at your own pace so you can go back over things that you don't understand as many times as you want.

The day skipper theory course from…

The day skipper theory course from Navathome is really good. It is well laid out and easy to follow. It is simple to see your progress. The website works very well, I didn’t have any issues with it. I didn’t need to ask many questions, as the online course is so well structured, but when I did they were answered quickly and clearly.

Comprehensive and high quality on line learning

A very comprehensive course giving time to complete all the exercises at your own pace, build confidence and commit everything to long term memory. I found this far better than creaming everything in over several weekends but be warned this is not the easy option. Fortunately great instructors available when required and instant feedback aids learning. Highly recommended.

Great course

Great course, super concise and well structured. I was able to sail through my practical assessment without any issues. (Dayskipper and Diesel Engine)

One of the best online courses ever!

One of the best online courses I’ve done, in any field. A great combination of text, diagrams, videos/animations, use of practical and physical components (charts, books, almanacs), quizzes, tests and full-on assessments. And there is always help from real people, who care about getting you where you want to be.

Very nice and helpful instructors

well structured course, with explanations for everyone. the instructors who are there for the student, helping him whenever he needs it.

Steve SP REPAIRS

Great Day skipper theory course fit in with my spare time.

Working so many hours I was able to fit the course in around my spare time.. the lessons were great and explained well with videos and graphics. The language was straightforward and although required some good concentration at times it was made even easier with how quick the reply to email questions would be.. I mean, literally a few minutes! This is a real professional set up with a real family/ kind feeling and atmosphere. Obviously you never meet the teachers apart from email but you can get a good sense that NavAtHome.com want you to pass vs just doing their jobs.. thank you NavAtHome.com, Jackie, Salomon and others that came back to my questions over the last months, look forward to doing the coastal course next year!

A very enjoyable course to do

The course was very easy to navigate and friendly to do. There are a few typos, but nothing to make anything ambiguous. I restarted the course this year after having to suspend doing it when I started caring for my mother a few years ago. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. I certainly will do another course in the future if I think it necessary for my level of sailing.

  • Plan your practical training at one of our many schools worldwide to earn your final qualification.

What our students say

Yachtmaster has taught thousands of students how to have a blast on the water.

yachtmaster navigation

I wanted to quickly say “thank you” for running an excellent course despite the obstacles of the recent snap COVID-19 lockdown. It was no mean feat and I’m sure a logistical nightmare. As a student, you got the course materials to me in record time and the Zoom sessions were effective in presenting the course and running the exercises.

The format was engaging and more importantly the information stuck and I learnt a lot. That’s the measure of success I’ve always used and I commend Yachtmaster Sailing School for a course well run in difficult circumstances. Gordon’s patience and forbearing in carefully explaining and re-explaining to clarify the principles of the course was both noticed and appreciated. Thank you for your care in my education – whilst in person would be preferred, I’d be happy to attend other theory class by remote if the situation required it!

yachtmaster navigation

My partner and I completed the yacht master 5 day trip and loved it. I was a complete novice, others on board more experienced. Gordon’s thorough explanations, patience and great sense of humour made the course so informative, catered to all levels and most importantly fun. We would highly recommend and can’t wait to go sailing again.

Kelly Anderson & Craig Smyth

yachtmaster navigation

Learning to sail with Yachtmaster has been one of the best decisions I have made. Gordon and his team have an ability to clearly articulate their immense sailing experience into easily understood lessons and skills. I’ve continually felt supported to learn and develop independence on water. If you have ever thought of learning to sail or build on your skills I couldn’t recommend them enough.

yachtmaster navigation

Gordon Syme is very clearly, a highly accomplished, knowledgeable and extensively experienced RYA Yachtmaster, examiner and course presenter. He presents information in a very interesting, practical, logical and easy to understand way (interspersed with some humour to keep students “on the ball”). I would recommend (and have done) Yachtmaster to anyone from those who want to start sailing, right though to RYA Yachtmaster. Thank you Gordon Syme!!!!!

David Temby

yachtmaster navigation

Amazing 5 day Day Skipper training with Yachtmaster.com.au. Learned a lot while having a good fun with a bunch of fantastic new friends on the boat. We had rain, strong wind, light wind, sun and clouds, night sailing and boat handling, all that in a good team. Thank you, Gordon Syme for all the fun and knowledge!

Miloslav Shulev

yachtmaster navigation

To everyone that may want to discover sailing, or learn the right things in the right way (having fun, and safe). I would also recommend it to everybody that I’ve ever sailed with, as I’m sure most of them would learn things during the course, at the very least they’d learn how to teach by seeing you doing it, as the way you explain things are much better than most people’s abilities.

Miguel A Molina

Would we recommend Gordon? Absolutely! To anybody who wants to learn to sail. From beginner to those experienced sailers who wants to climb to the next level. As soon as this COVID-19 business is over and we can return to the water we will be arranging our next skills session with Gordon.

Penny and David Goodman

Memorable moments.

Many of our students send us their happy snaps. Here is a small selection of the good times they have been enjoying while sailing with Yachtmaster. Send us your favourite images to [email protected] and we’ll add them to the gallery.

Everything you wanted to know about Moscow

yachtmaster navigation

When was Moscow founded?

Moscow appears in historical chronicles for the first time in 1147. The city was founded by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky of Suzdal , and the future megalopolis started with a fortress named the Kremlin.

We have already written about the facts and secrets of Moscow's Kremlin, and all the general knowledge you could possibly wish for – not to mention some great places to eat nearby.

However, initially, the land and villages close to where Moscow is situated today did not belong to the prince. It was the property of a boyar (nobleman) called Kuchka and was known as Kuchkovo. Kuchka fell from Dolgoruky’s grace and was sentenced to death and confiscation of all his landholdings .

Why was Moscow called ‘The third Rome’?

Actually it was the Orthodox monk Philotheus (Filofei) who called Moscow the Third Rome for the first time . He wrote: "All the Christian kingdoms have come to an end and have converged in the single kingdom of our sovereign," Philotheus wrote in one of the epistles. "Two Romes fell, a third stands, and there will not be a fourth one".

NB: Did you know that there are approximately 30 cities and villages named Moscow around the world ?

yachtmaster navigation

When did Moscow become Russia's capital?

Despite the fact Moscow was founded in 1147, it took almost another two centuries for the city to become the capital. It was only in 1380 that Moscow became the uncontested center of Russian territory for the first time.

In 1712, a few years before the Russian Empire was established, Peter the Great decided to move the capital from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

St. Petersburg remained the capital until the Empire’s demise following the 1917 Revolution. The Bolsheviks moved the capital back to Moscow in 1918 fearing foreign invasion.

Read about other places that once reigned supreme over Russian land s (spoiler: there were even six of them!)

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

Contrary to popular notions, Russia, and especially the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg are perfectly safe for tourists. Read our guide with four travel tips to ensure a safe journey: how to talk to Russian people, deal with emergencies and not get in trouble .

To support the contrary opinion, we have 10 reasons you should never ever visit Moscow (but we are not sure it works).

Read also the top 5 mistakes foreigners make in Moscow and try not to repeat them.

yachtmaster navigation

Is it expensive to visit Moscow?

There’s no point to lie – yes, it is. Moscow is one of the most expensive cities in the world, but still there are activities and tours you will not spend a single ruble on .

Check if you can afford to live in Moscow !

In case you can (and will), check these 5 most expensive suites in Moscow hotels .
