BB Riverboats Coming to Portsmouth in Late July

bb riverboats portsmouth ohio

The Belle of Cincinnati Riverboat

Article Presented By Hometown-Motors, Inc…

(Portsmouth) – The sights and sounds of the old Ohio River will be coming to Portsmouth July 27th-28th with the arrival of BB Riverboats.

BB Riverboats gets its name from the initials of the people who were instrumental in getting the business started; Ben Bernstein and Betty Blake. Although Betty did not have a financial interest, she was a veteran in the riverboat industry. She came from the Presidency of the Delta Queen Steamboat Company, which was headquartered in Cincinnati. Ben and Betty were close personal friends and there was no better person than Betty to fully understand all of the challenges of running a riverboat company. In an act to fully show his gratitude, Ben Bernstein named BB Riverboats’ first riverboat after Betty.

Although both have passed on, portraits of Ben and Betty are displayed on the Belle of Cincinnati, which is now the flagship of BB Riverboats’ fleet of riverboats.

What’s your perfect riverboat adventure? Maybe it’s a romantic evening for two under the stars, or a leisurely Sunday brunch with the family. Perhaps you and your friends are looking to just experience the sites along the river. Whatever motivates you to travel along the Ohio River, BB Riverboat Cruises can make your dreams come true.

BB Riverboat Cruises will offer four cruises in Portsmouth on July 23 and 24. On Thursday, July 23, there will be a dinner cruise from 7:30-9:30 p.m.; On Friday, July 24, a lunch cruise will sail from 12 noon to 2 p.m.; a sightseeing cruise from 3:30-5 p.m. and a dinner cruise from 7:30-9:30 p.m.

“We travel our boat here in Cincinnati mainly,” Ben Bernstein of BB Riverboat Cruises said. “We’re one of Cincinnati’s top attractions.”

BB Riverboat Tours has been doing a summer tour for over 10 years to river cities that are a little too far away from Cincinnati to regularly take the tour.

“With the times we’re living in it makes it a much more expensive night when you have to think about a hotel room and things like that,” Bernstein said. “So typically in the middle of the summer we travel the boat upriver and hit a lot of your river cities between here (Cincinnati) and the furthest point we get to – Point Pleasant, West Virginia.”

Bernstein said Portsmouth has been one of their stops every year during the summer tour and has always experienced a successful turnout.

“We bring our operation up there,” Bernstein said. “We operate two boats here in Cincinnati. The boat that does this (Portsmouth) tour is the largest excursion boat that operates on the Ohio River. It’s a 1,000 passenger paddlewheel boat that was built as a casino boat back in 1991 and we renovated it into an excursion boat and we’ve gone since 1999.”

Bernstein said reservations can be made by going to the company’s website – www.bbriverboats.com/summertour or by calling 800-261-8586.

HUNTINGTON - It was 45 years ago that Alan Bernstein graduated from Woodward High School in Cincinnati.

But Bernstein didn't make it to the graduation ceremony.

The then 18-year-old traveler whose dad was a diplomat in Ecuador during much of his teen years, found himself down by the Ohio River-side checking out the Delta Queen that was (a) hiring deckhands and (b) leaving for New Orleans.

"It was just by happenstance that I went down and I asked how you could get a job on the boat and they said 'if you're back here at five o' clock this afternoon we are heading to New Orleans,'" Bernstein said. "This was before cell phones and my parents weren't home and I couldn't reach them so I left a note, 'Dear Mom and Dad I got a job on the Delta Queen. I will be home in a few weeks.' My mom was petrified and when I got to New Orleans I called her on a pay phone and she answered and I said, 'this is your little baby son Alan,' and there was this long silence and the first thing she said was, 'Alan get your (expletive) home right now' and I said, 'mom I can't do that. It was a great experience and I can not come home until I am coming home.' She was terrified that I did something on my own but that is truly how I started."

That unique spur-of-the-moment Tom Sawyer-esque decision was one that changed the course of his life as Bernstein, the owner and operator of BB Riverboats out of Newport, Kentucky, has spent a good portion of his life piloting sternwheelers such as the Belle of Cincinnati up and down the Ohio River.

Fresh off some literal "all-star" treatment during this past week's Major League Baseball All-Star game hosted by the Cincinnati Reds, the Belle of Cincinnati, and Bernstein's crew of 25 are prepping for one of his favorite moments of the year, the Belle's annual Summer Cruise up the Ohio River through the area from Thursday, July 23 through Thursday, July 30 with stops in Portsmouth, Ohio, Ashland, Huntington, Maysville, Kentucky, and more.

Here's a look at the schedule for the lunch, dinner, and sightseeing cruises.

  • July 23 in Portsmouth for a 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. dinner cruise.

July 24 in Portsmouth for a noon lunch cruise, a 3:30 p.m. sightseeing cruise and a 7:30 p.m. dinner cruise.

July 25 in Ashland for a noon lunch cruise and a 7:30 p.m. dinner cruise.

July 26 in Huntington for a noon brunch cruise, a 3:30 p.m. sightseeing cruise and a 7:30 p.m. dinner cruise.

July 29 in Maysville, Kentucky, for a 7:30 p.m. dinner cruise.

July 30 in Maysville, Kentucky, for a noon lunch cruise and 3:30 p.m. for a sightseeing cruise.

Cost for the lunch/brunch cruises is $37 ($20 non-meal) and children $22 ($11 non-meal).

Sightseeing cruises are $20 and $11 for children while dinner cruises are $45 ($24 non-meal) and $26 for kids ($17 non-meal).

Bernstein, who earlier this year accepted the Maritime Person of the Year Award from the Port of Louisville Propeller Club for his involvement in the Centennial Festival of Riverboats and his knowledge and expertise in the riverboat industry, said he and the BB Riverboats team are still riding high following all of the prime-time exposure and fun they had during last week's All-Star game week festivities that included a Home Run Derby cruise.

"It has been a great week," Bernstein said. "It has been dampened a little bit by the high water on the river and everyone was expecting a huge presence with the boat and unfortunately Mother Nature did not allow that to happen but from a city standpoint and as far as excitement within the city I think it was, on a 1 to 10 scale, a 20."

Bernstein said not only did the MLB team decorate the city but they also decorated the BB Riverboats which were featured prominently in promos and clips that looped during the game coverage.

While it would be easy to bask in the after-glow of the All-Star excitement, Bernstein and his crew has its own game-day to prep for, the annual summer cruise. Bernstein said he does not foresee the higher water on the river canceling any of the cruises however, it will take a little bit longer to travel up the Ohio River with it being at full stage.

"We certainly are preparing for it to take longer than we normally do with it being at full stage and traveling between cities at night will take longer," Bernstein said. "We have had to adjust our timing quite a bit. Other than that, and other than a major flood, which I don't think is going to happen, it will be fine. I am hoping the landings are OK including Huntington, but we will make due and we are very excited and we look forward to this every year, and our crew looks forward to it because you are traveling and in different cities and different towns and they get to see that. For the crew it is like a camping trip as we turn the main deck into a dormitory of sorts at night with everyone on air mattresses. We have great facilities like showers, so it is nice and they get a nice air conditioned room and three meals a day but it is hard work."

The lure of life on the sternwheeler on the river is a powerful one, Bernstein said.

"It is sort of like a modern day Mark Twain kind of thing where you get to a lot of little towns like Maysville, Kentucky, and you see how a little town operates," Bernstein said. "Everybody who goes on these trips when we get back they say that was really a great experience and we enjoy coming to these river towns. It is sort of like the circus coming to town where they are coming down and taking pictures and asking you were you're from and where you are going."

Interestingly, Bernstein said he's got a particular soft spot for Huntington, a city he just visited a couple weeks ago to welcome in the new commander at the Huntington-based U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

"We see a lot of little towns but Huntington is not a small town and you've got great amenities there like Pullman Square and some really nice restaurants," Bernstein said. "I was there just a few weeks ago for the change of command at the Corps and got to stay downtown and just thought this is a really neat place that has a lot of energy with a lot of people downtown and it is sort of unique. Most people say they like Chicago and New York and L.A., but I happen to love all of these river towns."

While Bernstein said he loves being on the river, he also loves sharing that experience with folks who may not get out on the river save for a ride on the Belle, and connecting them to the history-rich feeling of floating on the river.

"It is a modern day way to get a good sense of what the settlers had to endure when they decided they were going to leave where they were from and float down this river and find a new place to live and for most of them it was a one-way trip and there is a natural beauty that goes when you leave a city and go out in the wilderness and that is really exceptional," Bernstein said. "The Ohio River is a beautiful thing to experience. I get to do it all the time and I never get tired of it and true river people don't get tired of it. When you go on a cruise you want to watch the river go by and wave at the people on the bank. To me it is a very mind boggling to think that people had the guts to get on a raft made of trees and float on the river to find a new place to live. We've got a modern day boat with engines and radar and all the modern day equipment. I sit in that pilot house thinking what it would have been like to do that, no radio, no radar, those people just had guts."

If you take a ride on the Belle:

ABOUT BB RIVERBOATS: In 1977, Ben Bernstein purchased the Mike Fink Restaurant in Covington, Kentucky, from Captain John Beatty. In 1979, BB Riverboats was formed and a staff began booking cruises from the 2nd deck of the Mike Fink Restaurant. The first cruise was on March 15, 1980 on the M/V Betty Blake, a 400 passenger sternwheeler that was leased from the Gateway Clipper Company from Pittsburgh.

BB Riverboats moved further down the river, just below the John Roebling Suspension Bridge and ran out of this location for about 10 years before becoming part of Covington's riverfront entertainment complex, "Covington Landing," where it operated until 2005. In 2005, BB Riverboats moved up to Newport, Kentucky, where it is located today on Riverboat Row. Ben's son Alan runs BB Riverboats with his wife Mary and their children, Terri and Ben Bernstein.

DID YOU KNOW? BB Riverboats was awarded the exclusive rights for riverboat cruises in the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee.

SPECIALTY CRUISES: BB Riverboats offers a slew of specialty cruises back in Newport from "Beer and BBQ" cruises to Pirate-themed cruises, cruises to Coney Island and much more.
