Within the space of just a few weeks two of the most aggressively campaigned big trimarans had between them broken and re-broken two great ocean racing records no less than four times
The MOD 70 trimaran class has history and form, plenty of both. In total, seven boats have been built, all are still sailing and some are still setting records. Peter Cunningham’s distinctive blue PowerPlay (formerly Concise), and now actively for sale as a turnkey package, is among those that continue to lead the charge, having recently set new records over the Fastnet racecourse and the classic Cowes to St Malo route.
But in a clear indication of just how competitive this unique fleet of oceangoing trimarans continues to be, it took little time for a sistership to up the ante. In the case of the Cowes-St Malo route, it was just minutes before Maserati had broken PowerPlay’s new record after the pair had set out on the same morning from the Solent in a cross-Channel duel.
Cunningham and his crew, led by longtime MOD70 skipper Ned Collier- Wakefield, set an extraordinary pace around the traditional Fastnet racecourse. A month later Maserati did the double and raised the bar even further, beating PowerPlay’s time by over an hour, completing the 605nm-course in a staggering 23 hours, 51 minutes and 16 seconds at an average speed of 24.94kts.
To have held an impressive record across an internationally famous offshore route for such a short period of time was doubtless frustrating for the PowerPlay crew, yet the ongoing rivalry is another reminder as to why the MOD70 continues to be an appealing and reliable inshore and offshore machine. Unlike other designs, the MOD70 hasn’t just kept pace with current developments, but in many cases has led the way.
The world of performance sailing has advanced rapidly over the last decade with speeds accelerating both inshore and offshore. The development of foil technology, driven initially by the big changes in the build-up to the 2013 America’s Cup in San Francisco, saw the 72ft foiling leviathans raise the racing above the water’s surface taking the top speeds with them. Then, the following season, the wing-masted AC45s were up on foils as the Cup looked ahead to another high-speed foiling event.
The technology triggered responses throughout the racing world with foiling finding its way into offshore racing aboard the Ultime class of 32m multihulls as well as the Imoca 60 monohulls. Everyone it seemed wanted to fly.
Meanwhile, the MOD70s appeared to be still operating in displacement mode yet in reality their C-section daggerboards had already been quietly providing foiling assistance, generating vertical lift that was not only increasing the power through additional righting moment but also helping to prevent the bows from burying at speed. While they may not have been seen primarily as foiling boats, the lessons learned aboard the MOD70s, especially in offshore conditions, were being fed back into the system helping to fuel the highspeed revolution.
The original concept of the MOD70 started back in 2009 as a one-design oceanic racer. The aim was to build a boat which would be the standard for the next 10 years. The development of the MOD70 was a collaboration between the VPLP design firm (Vincent Lauriot-Prévost and Marc Van Peteghem) and the Lausanne-based founding company Multi One Design S.A.
The original 10-year goal has clearly been achieved, albeit in a slightly different way as the one-design element has changed and various boats have been modified and tweaked. Yet despite the range of modifications that have taken place aboard some of these boats, the racing remains impressively close when MOD70s line up against each other.
So, what is it that has made these trimarans so enduring while also remaining so quick?
‘I think VPLP, got it right with the original design as they put more emphasis into building a stronger boat compared with the Orma days,’ says skipper Ned Collier-Wakefield. ‘These boats are bulletproof. We can push them hard and they just lap it up. You can set out on a record attempt and smash it across the Atlantic and you tie the boat up at the dock at the end of the day, wash it down and it’s pretty much done.
‘Plus, I think they’re pretty safe. You can push them really, really hard and yet they’re still quick, amazingly quick. And while we’re all doing little upgrades, they’re generally pretty small ones aside from Maserati’s fully foiling package and even then, there are positives and negatives depending on what kind of racing you’re doing.’
Another interesting feature of the class is that unlike many other grand prix machines, especially ones that are capable of similar speeds, the MOD70s don’t require a large shoreside team to maintain them.
‘Martin Watts has run the boat since we took her on in 2015,’ continues Collier-Wakefield. ‘Essentially it’s been him by himself, plus a couple of young guys helping him occasionally. But there’s not much to it. They’re simple boats and don’t require much in the way of staffing. We deliver with five crew, race offshore with six or seven and inshore we might take a few more big guys to help on the handles,’
Watts is quick to confirm this while describing the maintenance of the big blue beast in even simpler terms. ‘I think of the MOD70 as a TP52 with some bits strapped to the sides,’ he says. ‘When you look at it, the winches are not huge and there’s not masses to service. The winches are the main focus as we do push them pretty hard, especially with the modern high-performance ropes which mean that the loads are up to their maximum. We also service the hydraulics every six months. These rams allow us to cant the rig and so we do change them from time to time but apart from that the maintenance programme is the same as any other boat and simply about managing wear and tear.’
But behind the scenes, PowerPlay has something that sets her apart from her sisterships, and that is her owner. Peter Cunningham is a lifelong racer, having raced a wide variety of craft in a number of different locations around the world. But after he sold his business in California he decided that he wanted to take part in some offshore racing and started looking at the MOD70. There is nothing particularly unusual in that, other than he was already in his mid-seventies when he decided to buy PowerPlay. Now, having raced across the Atlantic, competed in the Middle Sea Race and many other events, he was on board for both of the most recent record-breaking runs around the Fastnet and to St Malo. A few weeks later he would celebrate his 80th birthday.
‘It’s a physical boat and you’ve got to be careful when you’re down below, especially at speed,’ he says. ‘Plus, there are some unusual motions especially in breezy conditions when you might lift the leeward daggerboard. This means that rather than heeling over when a gusts hits, you skip sideways which can catch you off guard. So, my rule is always having three points of contact!’
Having come from monohulls, albeit with some quick ones such as a TP52 and a J70, how had he found the experience?
‘It’s exciting, probably more exciting than I thought and at times it makes you afraid, but you do get used to it after a while and when you’re steering from 20ft above the water’s surface at speed it’s just magical.
‘Experiencing flat-out sailing for five or six days non-stop is pretty special too,’ he continues. ‘It’s pretty stressful on all of the crew and while this boat is actually very forgiving, it still highlights the need to really know what you’re doing at a level that is very different to monohull racing. That in itself is very rewarding as you learn a lot about yourself and the importance of how a team needs to work together at this level. Sometimes there are decisions to be made intuitively in a split second that involve everyone, teamwork is crucial, without it you can be in trouble.
‘Seeing this, understanding it and being a part of it has definitely benefitted my sailing in other areas, it helps you put things into perspective, understand how people deal with issues and has improved my manner on other boats. I have learned a great deal.
‘I treat my sailing as a project and after you’ve experienced something like this it’s difficult to think of what kind of project you could move onto, but I do still have at least one goal. ‘My top speed at the helm is 38.9kts, I want to hit 40 and I can’t sell her until I do.’

Following in the wake of the ORMA series , this class of one-design trimarans, initiated in 2006, is the distillation of VPLP’s experience in the design and optimization of multihull racing sailing boats spanning more than fifteen years .
With the same righting moment, longer floats and a shorter mast than the ORMA trimarans, the Multi One Design 70s are designed predominantly for ocean racing with a crew of six.
Studies undertaken by HDS managed to improve the reliability of the construction materials by 25%. In total seven MOD 70s have been built , all from the same mould and at the same yards. They have identical mass to a tolerance of 50 kg, weighing in at 6.3 tonnes.
Launched in 2010, the MOD 70s rapidly proved their considerable reliability , exemplary sea-keeping qualities and potential for speed by crossing the Atlantic, from New York to Brest, in under five days during the 2012 Krys Ocean Race.
Some have been raced solo and double-handed, for instance in the 2013 Transat Jacques Vabre and the 2014 Route du Rhum.
Subsequent to the demise of the MOD 70 circuit, several of them were bought by European and American teams who continue to sail them in various multihull events and ocean-crossing record attempts. Some have been optimized, such as Maserati , skippered by Giovanni Soldini.

Coolest yachts: MOD 70
- March 23, 2023
We ask top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times. Sam Goodchild nominates theb MOD70 class trimaran
“In terms of complexity for speed, there isn’t anything else which has such a good ratio as a MOD 70. We’ve been over 40 knots [boatspeed] on them, and with Phaedo we used to sail for up to 200 days a year, all around the world, with just two shore crew. We were sailing offshore with just five people, so you’ve got super high performance for relatively easy upkeep.
“We’d be doing the Caribbean regattas against boats like Comanche , they’d have 20-something people on the rail and we had five, doing circles around them! Then we did all the transatlantic races – for me it’s an amazing boat.
Photo: Kurt Arrigo/Rolex Middle Sea Race
“The MOD 70s are robustly built, but also fast. [designers VPLP] took learnings from the Orma 60 class, all the best bits, tamed them down a little so they’re a bit less dangerous, and came out with a boat which was simple and fast. We raced against the old Groupama Orma 60, and when you see how much more complicated the Ormas are, the MOD 70s definitely struck the right balance.”

MOD70: “We built them tough!”
Published on March 21st, 2023 by Editor -->
While the one design intentions of the MOD70 Class did not succeed, the trimaran has proven to be a reliable offshore competitor since its launch 13 years ago. Vincent Lauriot Prévost and Quentin Lucet of VPLP Design, the architect of these boats, provides an update:
The distillation of four generations of ORMA trimarans (from Pierre 1er to Groupama 2), the MOD 70s were designed to be competitive for at least ten years at the pinnacle of racing. While the one-design circuit that accompanied their 2010 launch was abandoned after two years, a victim of circumstance, these trimarans built by CDK Technologies have never stopped sailing.
“Apart from operating accidents, none of the boats ever had a problem with its structure,” notes Vincent Lauriot Prévost, cofounder of VPLP Design. “Back when we were designing them, we identified a dozen recurrent failures on the ORMAs and we took those lessons into account. The goal was to build multihulls that you could sail without any qualms or frequent refits.”
After 2013, the fleet scattered to the four corners of the globe, undertaking activities as varied as public relations and record-breaking, while some such as Gitana XV (now Maserati) became platforms for testing offshore multihull foiling.
Since 2020, six of the seven MOD70s have been meeting in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean (only Orion, formerly Veolia Environnement, remains in San Francisco) to race various classics, such as the RORC Transatlantic Race, the RORC Caribbean 600 and the Middle Sea Race.
“The atmosphere is fantastic because they are owners, not established teams, who are racing for fun, beholden to nobody, and with enough latitude to organize themselves as they wish. And they’re often backed up with big names, such as Loïck Peyron, Brian Thompson, and Paul Larsen,” says Vincent Lauriot Prévost.
And as if proof were needed that the series has retained its material coherence after all these years, the races often see tight finishes and a healthy rotation on the podium. “The most recent RORC Caribbean 600 culminated in an 11 second gap between Zoulou and Maserati,” says Quentin Lucet, partner naval architect. “The differences in development get washed out in the sailing conditions.”
Some of the owners want to update their vessels, such as Jason Caroll (Argo, formerly Musandam Oman Sail) and Erik Maris (Zoulou, formerly Paprec Recyclage), and have sought VPLP Design’s help.
“Over the last ten years,” says Quentin Lucet, “we have made enormous progress in terms of foiling, notably through our work on the Ultim class and the IMOCAs. So we’ve been working on a new set of appendages for the MOD70s, the idea being to converge on a common solution without betraying the original philosophy.
“The goal is indeed to sail flatter, faster, and in greater safety, and certainly not about flying three feet over the waves. We’ve imposed on ourselves the limit of not reworking the structure because we don’t want to risk deteriorating the vessels’ reliability. The owners appreciate the problem-free aspect of the boats, even after all the nautical miles they have accumulated in their wake.”
The crew behind Argo have commissioned new foils from Avel Robotics in Lorient (France) and T-foil rudders from C3 Technologies in La Rochelle (France).
That the MOD70s were recognized in 2023 by the IMA (International Maxi Association), which is becoming more open-minded about multihulls, means these one-design trimarans could be about to extend their competitive reach. Entry to grueling events, such as the Sydney Hobart, would be the icing on the cake.
“It’s not at all unreasonable,” says Vincent Lauriot Prévost. “During the initial development of the MOD70s, a race around the world via the canals was mooted, with a leg from Hawaii to Australia, which would have been three weeks of pretty stimulating sailing. We built them tough!”

Her history
The racing stable’s first boat
The MOD 70 (Multihull One Design) is a 70-foot (21.20 metres) one-design trimaran designed by the VPLP architectural firm in 2006 and launched in 2010. Seven craft were built in all, one of which was for the Spindrift racing stable. On 27 January 2012, boat No.5 of this innovative series was launched in Lorient, south-west Brittany, flying the flag for Spindrift racing. This was the very first boat to be fitted out by the racing stable created by Dona Bertarelli and Yann Guichard a year earlier. Just a month after her launch, the MOD70 Spindrift scored her first bullet in the Krys Ocean Race, a crewed transatlantic race between New York and Brest. That same year, the team led by Yann Guichard took victory in the Multi One Championship.
RACE FOR WATER
The MOD 70 class is born in 2009 with the experience gained in the Orma 60 trimaran class, from an association between 3 passionate entrepreneurs & sailors: Marco Simeoni, Steve Ravussin and Franck David.
At the start of the 2008 Vendee Globe race, Steve Ravussin and Franck David, introduced the concept of the Multi One Design project, which was to set a class of offshore identical trimarans, to Marco Simeoni.
This concept to have international renown skippers with equal potential to race around the world, seduced the Swiss businessman Marco Simeoni who signed an order for 5 MOD 70; to start the Multi One Design story.
In 2009 the company Multi One Design is created in Lausanne (Switzerland) at the same time as the Race for Water foundation in order to inform, share views and act on water issues worldwide and oceans protection. Race for Water foundation associated with the first MOD 70 to be built. In total 7 teams of 3 different nationalities were engaged to race on the MOD 70 including Michel Desjoyeaux on Foncia, Roland Jourdain on Veolia Environnement, Sidney Gavignet on Oman Sails, Yann Guichard on Spindrift Racing and Jean-Pierre Dick on Paprec Virbac. Compared to the Orma 60, the MOD 70 have the following improvements:
- 5% reduced sail area for better safety - Main hull 10 feet longer for avowing pitch haul - Raised beams for better passage in the waves - Lifting main rudder - Curved foils for better performance and safety - Canting mast positioned further aft

- By The Editors
- Updated: March 29, 2013
Orion Racing, under the hand of top multihull sailor Cam Lewis, is the first MOD70 campaign to set up shop in the United States. “The conditions for racing the MOD70 between California, Hawaii, and Mexico are incredible,” said Lewis in a February press release . “I can’t wait to show American sailors how fantastic and fast these amazing machines are.”
On March 13, Orion Racing’s MOD70 was launched in Lorient , France. It will be shipped to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to set up for training for the next three months. By July, the team plans to be based out of San Francisco. Preliminary plans for the 2014-15 season include the Krys Ocean Race from Brest to New York.
“MOD is delighted to welcome an American boat-owner as it increases the number of nationalities in the circuit”, said Marco Simeoni, President of Multi One Design, in the February press release. “Orion will bring a new dynamic to the development of the circuit and promote the MOD70 series in the American Market.”
_“_This is a great opportunity for sailing in the United States,” Lewis said in the press release. “The MOD 70 trimarans are at the cutting edge of the sport. They are purpose designed and built for close inshore racing as well as transoceanic racing.”

Snowflake racing
Where grit, skill, and tech take to the seas
From the shores of Silicon Valley to the seas that span the world, Snowflake has brought together the best talent and technology to multihull racing. The Snowflake Racing team comprises more than one hundred years of yacht racing and data analytics experience.
MOD-70, A HISTORY
Multihulls have been part of professional sailing since the 1970s. But in 2009, the design for the MOD70 emerged. Five, 70ft trimarans were later constructed of precise specifications with the intent of them being some of the most efficient, performant, and durable yachts on the open seas. They included smaller sail areas for better safety, and a longer central hull, raised beam clearance, curved foils, and the possibility to lift the center hull rudder for better performance.
SNOWFLAKE PARTNERSHIP
The vessel that is now the Snowflake MOD70 was originally launched in 2010 under different ownership, and has since won or placed in dozens of races spanning six days to just one hour in duration. With Snowflake as a partner, the MOD70 and its crew now benefit from access to world-class computing solutions and analytics that can capture any amount of information related to the yacht’s design and performance: weather, navigation, speed, and many other data points that result in enhancements to the yacht and new strategies for the crew.
WHERE THE SNOW FALLS
Keep track where the team has been, their results, and where they’re heading next on the world racing circuit.
Snowflake’s team hails from New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. These champions have built vessels, and have raced many to the finish line.
DATA-DRIVEN SAILING
Using technology to enable and improve the performance of professional athletes and their equipment has been happening for decades. In recent years, data science, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) continue to deliver some of the biggest impacts to business and professional sports. Snowflake’s Data Cloud helps power those achievements, and will do so for Snowflake Racing.
Data Analysis and Visualization
Single- and multi-vessel sailing simulations, large-scale parallel training, real-time professional & spectator vs. ai bot test trials, ai-based reinforcement learning, get started today.
Snowflake’s Data Cloud powers one of the fastest and challenging sports on earth. Find out to what horizon, and beyond, the Data Cloud can take your business.

Written by Mike Smith
In 2000, Baron Benjamin de Rothschild chose to perpetuate a 100 year old passion for watersports, initiated by his forebears, by expanding his family’s history to multihulls. These magnificent machines have fascinated him for a great many years, as much through their elegance as the technical skill and expertise that is required to sail them. The Gitana Team was created to form an offshore racing stable dedicated to a passion for making speed across the water and hatching fresh talent. Ten years on, Benjamin de Rothschild confirms his status as a major player in ocean racing circles – and a fervent multihull owner – by agreeing to participate in a new international oceanic class: the MOD 70, one design 70 foot trimarans.
Trimaran 70'Mod gitana 11
The third team to announce its participation in the Multi One Championship, the Gitana Team thus joins the one design Ambassador, skippered by Swiss sailor Stève Ravussin, and the trimaran Foncia, helmed by Michel Desjoyeaux, in writing this new page on oceanic multihulls. An undisputed affection for the craft as well as an infatuation for crewed races, where the team spirit and cohesion so dear to Baroness and Baron de Rothschild take on their true dimension, have largely guided the choices in this new, daring challenge: “Save for the Gitana Eighty adventure, the history of the Gitana Team has always been associated with multiple hulls. Following the fall of the Orma Championship and despite a concerted effort to provide a future for 60 foot multihulls, we were lacking a circuit. The Multi One Championship partly meets our requirements. Through competitive sailing we hope to perpetuate the family values: transcending ones own capabilities, the systematic search for excellence, teamwork, and an openness to the world and innovation. Ranking among the pioneers of this new class seemed natural to us.”
Cyril Dardashti, general manager of the Gitana Team, was naturally delighted with this announcement: “The decision by the boats’ owners to continue the Gitana story, by taking part in the Multi One Championship, is tremendous news for a team, which has brought the multihull class to life for what has already been nearly ten years. The provisional programme announced by the Multi One Design offers a mixture of oceanic and Grand Prix style races, however the approach goes further than that of the Orma Championship, since a round the world with stopovers will be organised every three years. This new dimension has additional appeal. The restricted intake imposed per nation and the desire for international openness which ensues, are also very important factors about this circuit. Indeed the Orma championship suffered in its time through, among other things, being overly Franco-French. I hope that overseas crews will appreciate this project and come and join us.”
In his position as President of Multi One Design S.A., Marco Simeoni welcomes the Gitana Team’s entry the fray within the Multi One Championship: “It’s an honour and a great pleasure for Multi One Design SA to play host to a team of such renown as Gitana in the MOD 70’ championship. Gitana Team’s track record and the loyalty of Baron Benjamin de Rothschild towards the multihull are exemplary. This participation already demonstrates the high level of the competition that will be racing in the Multi One Championship. We’d like to wish the whole Gitana team a warm welcome and look forward to seeing you in September 2011 for the launch of the MOD 70’ Gitana.”
The MOD 70’ Gitana, whose delivery is scheduled during the course of September 2011, will be the ninth yacht from the Gitana Team to defend the colours of the Edmond de Rothschild Group on seas across the globe. In the run-up to the arrival of this new craft, the team is concentrating on its major competitive objective of 2010, namely the Route du Rhum, which will set off from Saint Malo, France on 31st October 2010. Finally the Gitana sailing season will also be marked by the participation of the Edmond de Rothschild Group catamaran in the Extreme Sailing Series; a European inshore race circuit in which the performance of Yann Guichard and his men shone out in 2009, when they took second place in the championship. The first Grand Prix of the 2010 season is to take place in Sète, southern France, from 27th to 30th May 2010.

On 16th April 2010, whilst Yann Guichard was carrying out a solo training session offshore, the maxi-trimaran Gitana 11 suffered float damage. To avoid taking any unnecessary risk and given the blustery conditions reigning over the zone at the time, it was decided that a pit stop would be necessary in Dingle (Ireland) – the port closest to where the incident happened – to effect temporary repairs and make it back to Gitana Team’s technical base as quickly as possible. Returning to La Trinité-sur-Mer on Monday 26th April, the most recent of the Gitana fleet has since been lifted back into one of the base’s sheds in nearby Saint-Philibert for a refit and further consolidation as a precautionary measure. The team will also benefit from this time on the hard to look ahead to the running maintenance, which was initially scheduled to take place during the summer.
After a pit stop in Dingle, Yann Guichard was able to head back out to sea again and set a course, single-handed, for Gitana 11’s port of registry. The minute the 77 foot maxi-trimaran was tied up at the Loic Caradec jetty in La Trinité-sur-Mer, the shore crew, led by William Fabulet, organised for her to be lifted out onto the hard. “Our 2010 programme of fine tuning and sailing was designed so that Gitana 11 could be back in the water early in the season. Our aim was to focus on testing the platform in some varied wind conditions, which is an element that wasn’t entirely completed in the autumn of 2009 due to the lack of opportunities in the weather. However, the conditions encountered in mid-April, during my solo trip, were particularly trying for the boat, especially as regards the short, cross seas” explained Yann Guichard before going on to specify the issues involved: “At that point, Gitana 11’s new floats showed signs of weakness around the forward beam. These observations have prompted us to reinforce this zone.”
Right now, discussions are underway between the project’s various technical contributors, namely Gitana Team’s design office, the VPLP naval architecture firm and HDS, a company specialised in structural calculation. “Following the detection of anomalies in the floats, the shore team will err on the side of caution and carry out a thorough inspection of each of the hulls to protect them. Nothing can be left to chance and these operations will require Gitana 11 to be moved back into the shed” confided Cyril Dardashti, the team manager at Baron Benjamin de Rothschild’s racing stable. As with the motor industry, competitive sailing, especially that involving oceanic multihulls, is a mechanical sport. The fine tuning of prototypes calls for numerous adjustments. These technical vagaries are nevertheless a way of moving forward and improving the machines so as to get the very best out of them. It’s all part of the rules of the game! With six months to go till the start of the legendary transatlantic race between Saint Malo and Pointe-à-Pitre, the men and women that make up the Gitana Team are continuing to hone the maxi-trimaran Gitana 11 to ensure that the reigning champion is all ready to take up the challenge at the end of October.

MOD 70 hydrofoils
Ultra-modern, lighter = better, craftsmanship, mod70 hydrofoils - design.
We produce the Mod70 hydrofoils for the trimarans in this fast, offshore sailing class. Teams Argo Racing and Beau Geste Racing already sail with uptip L-foils designed by Martin Fischer. In cooperation with Andrew MacPherson (Macca) two sets of foils have already been developed and shipped.
We build your new foiling boat!
Material & technology.
Basic material: the foils are made of carbon pre-preg. The Mod70 hydrofoil models are milled from the 3D-file and Autoclave-resistant carbon tooling is made. With our unique ‘one-shot’ production process, we manufacture all our continuous fiber foils under vacuum cured in our Autoclave.
The production method specially developed for this purpose creates a hydrofoil that cures in one go, without glue joints and including internal stiffening ribs. The result is a super-strong hydrofoil that is as light as possible.
The pre-cutting process of laminates is done by our automated pre-preg cutting machine of the brand Zünd . This process ensures excellent product quality and constant product weight.
For the Mod70 hydrofoils, the board up and down facilities in the foils are also fitted.

Orion Racing join MOD70 Class
Multi One Design (MOD) announced today that US-based Orion Racing has purchased MOD nr.02. “MOD is delighted to welcome an American boat-owner as it increases the number of nationalities in the circuit”, said Marco Simeoni, President of Multi One Design. “Orion will bring a new dynamic to the development of the circuit and promote the MOD70 series in the American Market.”
Cam Lewis, one of the top American multihull sailors and longtime and ambassador for multihull sailing in the US, is a principal in the formation of the Orion Racing team. Cam Lewis is regarded as one of the top multihull sailors in the US having won the 1988 America’s Cup on the Wing Powered Stars and Stripes and skippered the Maxi-catamaran Team Adventure in The Race in 2000. “This is a great opportunity for sailing in the United States,” Lewis said. “The MOD 70 trimarans are at the cutting edge of the sport. They are purpose designed and built for close inshore racing as well as transoceanic racing. The conditions for racing the MOD70 between California, Hawaii and Mexico are incredible. I can’t wait to show American sailors how fantastic and fast these amazing machines are.” With 2013 being a transition year for the MOD70 circuit, Orion Racing will be training in the Pacific to fully discover this latest generation of racing multihull. The boat and team will set up a training camp in Puerto Vallarta Mexico in May then move to San Francisco for the summer and fall season. Orion Racing Team preliminary race planning for 2014-2015 includes the MOD70 circuit and the Krys Ocean Race (from Brest to New York).

MOD70 trimaran flips
Virbac paprec capsizes while training for the transat.
Champion French sailor Jean-Pierre Dick’s new MOD70 trimaran Virbac Paprec has capsized while he and crew member Roland Jourdain were training for the Transat Jaques Vabre race.
According to Roland, the pair were sailing in 15-18 knots of breeze and handling the conditions comfortably when a stronger gust grabbed the giant tri. “We were sailing in a settled 15 knot wind, but it was irregular with gusts of 18-20 knots. The conditions were workable,” he said.
“Suddenly, there was a gust that was stronger than the others. The boat lifted and lifted. It stayed stationary for a few interminable seconds. I eased out the solent jib. We thought we were going to fall on the right side, and well no, the boat capsized. I was very frightened for Jean-Pierre. It is the first time that I have capsized. I am shaken."
Word from the team stated that both sailors thought they were unhurt but Dick was later transferred by helicopter to hospital in Lorient where he was diagnosed with a collapsed vertebrae.
“I fell from a great height,” he said. “I hit something and fell into the water. It was violent. Fortunately, I managed to get back on board very quickly. I quickly realised that my back hurt. We waited for the rescue teams feeling great sadness."
The boat’s mast was broken in three places in the capsize and the upturned trimaran is being towed to Lorient.
