Simply the best casual bar in Raleigh. The upstairs porch is lovely and the vibes are immaculate. Great place on a weeknight or ... a weekend. They are now doing food on Sunday afternoons as well. Everyone is very friendly. Read more

A nice outdoor 2nd floor hangout built on top of a divey first floor. Interesting combo. Quieter than most of Glenwood due to ... its location. The 2nd floor might be nice for day drinking, but I probably wouldn't head that way for a Friday or Saturdaynight. Read more

Had a great time at this bar for a quick drink last night, but in the morning, I realized I may have forgotten my credit card.. ... However, none of the phone numbers listed on google/their website work, and when I stopped by at 1:30pm Sunday (website saysthey open at 12pm), I was told very rudely that there was a private party, and I must return at 4pm for them to help me withanything. I then asked if someone could just LOOK behind the bar to let me know if there were any cards left last night, and Iwas again told very rudely, ?NO. Come back at 4pm.? If this is a policy to hold people?s credit cards hostage, there is nothingelse to say other than that is an ATROCIOUS policy; if it was just the middle aged lady with short red hair who I talked to, sheshould not be working in a costumer service-based industry. One of my favorite places to spend an afternoon with my friends. What a fun, easygoing spot with nice staff and good music. I ... always feel welcome and at peace there. The outdoor seating is very cool, and they invested in a neat rooftop patio. The slideis fun but short and fast, so beware after a few drinks! Read more

Johnson Street Yacht Club, Raleigh – A Chill Spot for a Drink and a Slide

Johnson Street Yacht Club in Raleigh

As somebody who used to live near Glenwood South for over a decade, I’ve known it’s always been a club, bar, and lounge mecca in the area. But as a local, I always enjoyed the quieter bars in the area. From the Flash House to Napper Tandys, these spots used to be a block or two off the beaten path and had a more local crowd. The newest bar in this neighborhood bar category is the Johnson Street Yacht Club (JSYC)! But don’t let the name fool you, you won’t need a blue blazer for this spot. Here’s what to expect if you visit the JSYC.

Interior of Johnson Street Yacht Club in Raleigh

Located on Johnson Street (duh) in the old building previously known as “The Office”, the JSYC presents a mysterious facade! A cool, brick privacy wall wraps the front patio and looking above, you’ll find a 2nd floor patio and is that what I think it is?! A bright blue slide dropping into 1st floor patio! Inside the JSYC is all dive bar. Unfinished concrete floor, weathered wood bar and trim, pool table, and juke box. Yeah, I think you’ll feel pretty comfortable here! A selection of bottled beers, basic liquors, and affordable drink prices means you’ve got a place to hang out in with little pretension.

Back area of Johnson Street Yacht Club in Raleigh

My first couple of visits to the JSYC were pre-pandemic and then I’ve made a couple of visits post-pandemic and it’s a very mixed crowd here in a good way. A mix of older locals, business people, young 20-somethings (the slide) along with service people usually are hanging out here. And I’m sure over the weekend it attracts a spill-over crowd from Glenwood South. JSYC is woman-owned and woman-friendly so my guess is they will keep any asshole-ish behavior to a minimum!

Patio and slide at Johnson Street Yacht Club in Raleigh

But in general, you’ll find a good mix of locals at JSYC along with their attentive bartenders. Upstairs is where things get a bit more interesting! There’s a large bar along with TV and music along with some patio deck chairs and covered umbrellas. And what about the big blue slide you spied from the outside? The entrance to the slide is up here and you will be whisked down to the first-floor patio in a jiffy. The slide is fast, keep your elbows tucked in (or you’ll skin them) and make sure your knees are ready to cushion the landing! And at night, you’ll find that second-floor patio to be a bit of a magical spot with the warmer weather.

While Johnson Street Yacht Club is not for everyone, it works pretty well for me. I enjoy my fancy-shmancy bars but if I lived in this hood again, I would definitely stop by from time to time to meet a friend and chat. During this pandemic, social connections have been cut short but I imagine that the JSYC would be a good spot to re-establish people connections since it’s managed to survive all that craziness!

JOHNSON STREET YACHT CLUB

710 W. Johnson St., Raleigh

919-977-5015, jsyachtclub.com

In downtown Raleigh, dive bars are a dying breed.

Sure, Slim’s isn’t going anywhere , but not everyone wants to have their eardrums ruptured on a Tuesday night. Elsewhere, true dives—dimly lit haunts with an unmistakable grime, the waft of stale tobacco from the patio’s cigarette graveyard, and more than one $3 beer—are hard to find in a downtown populated by an ever-increasing supply of high-end wine and cocktail bars.

You can get your whiskey on at Fox Liquor Bar, but it’s going to cost you fourteen bucks.

Johnson Street Yacht Club, the latest venture from Bittersweet’s Kim Hammer , may be the city’s last true new dive. That’s because you can’t just build a new dive bar. A dive bar cannot be fabricated; it must be born out of filth and desperation, baptized in PBR and sweat, branded in moon-shaped burns on duct-taped bar stools. It can’t be realized with a vintage Doors poster and distressed oak bar. You can’t hock artisan pretzels and call yourself a dive.

Johnson Street is, in some ways, a resurrection of The Office, the beloved neighborhood bar that occupied these black-painted walls until 2017. But it’s also its own species. Instead of an Addams Family pinball machine, there’s 007. The jukebox contains only female musicians. The décor consists of haphazardly strung Christmas lights and disposable-camera photos stuck to the ceiling alongside baseball cards.

If you’re hungry, I hope you like pork rinds or pistachios.

johnson street yacht club menu

While there are irony-drenched “yacht clubs” lots of places, from Asheville to San Francisco to Greensboro, this isn’t a chain, though the basics are the same: Beer comes in a can, and the priciest drink (a $13 Johnny Walker Black) comes in a plastic cup.

On a Sunday night, when I nestle into the corner of the bar and order a shot of whiskey with a Tecate chaser, the bar is mostly full of industry folks—waitresses and bartenders fresh off shifts elsewhere.

The guy next to me orders a shot, too. He introduces himself as Mitch. A good dive-bar name.

“Dear sweet Evan Green,” Mitch declares. “Here we are.”

Indeed. I glug and shiver.

The yachtless club is a legacy of the great Raleigh dives of yore, Mitch says. Deep South closed in 2018, DIVEbar Raleigh some years before that. Just two blocks away, Cornerstone Tavern—a strip of oversized dance bungalows that lures a line of frat boys to its gates on weekends—is bribing patrons with free barbecue and Rice Krispies treats. Nearby in Glenwood South, a five-hundred-square-foot studio rents for $1,200 a month.

“A dive bar is the great equalizer,” Andrew Baker, a Cancer with a rhinestone on his forehead, tells me over Fernet and Montenegro shots.

Before he can explain, a pool stick slaps the floor as Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” blares through the speakers. A group gathers on the nondescript dance floor, and a guy in a patchwork sweater falls on his ass.

Some people are eating cake on paper plates. It’s someone (allegedly) named Andrew Robb Rager’s birthday. (I’m too drunk to question if that’s really his name). The entire bar migrates to the smoking patio, and a woman dressed as if Mad Max ’s Furiosa were a mermaid is standing on the roof holding a paper lantern and a lighter. The delicate bubble of light gracefully floats up into the foggy black sky. Another bursts into flames before leaving the ground.

“Put it out! PUT IT OUT!” a woman shouts.

A true dive bar is where moments like this happen, and where they’re unscripted. Where the single-stall bathroom rarely has a line, and where you don’t need tattoos to feel welcome. Where all of the photos you take will be blurry, and where it’s always cool to buy a stranger a shot.

Good people, good food, good music. Really like this place! We joined about two months ago, and have met a lot of really nice people. The atmosphere is friendly to all. By the way, this place is pinned to the wrong spot on the map.

One of the best kept secrets in the LA harbor. Great yacht club with very reasonable membership and great prices on beers and mixed drinks in the bar daily . Weekly dinners on Saturdays. Great bands playing during the year for special theme weekends. If you into boating and not a member of the famous San Pedro Yacht Club now is the time to join. Great bunch of members. Tons of good times at one of the only floating two story yacht clubs in the world.

Cathy Johnson (Oct. 8th, 1925 - July 6th, 2022), passed away at 97 years old, having lived an active life in which she contributed to her community and her causes. Though socially conservative, she was passionate about women’s rights for self determination in education, work and family planning. She was equally passionate about public transportation and passenger rail service. Cathy was born to Theodore and Eva Michels on October 8th, 1925 in Washington Iowa. She was the middle of three daughters. Betty, Catherine and Ruth. The family later moved to 610 Lynn St. in Tipton, Iowa. Her father Ted was a lawyer and District Attorney. Her mother Eva was a school Latin teacher. As a young woman she was a Campfire Girl and played trumpet in the high school band. Finishing school at St.Katharine’s school for Girls in Davenport, Iowa in 1943. Her parents were staunch Republicans often hosting traveling candidates. This nurtured her lifelong interest in politics. She attended Iowa State College during the second world war, where she was a second generation Delta Zeta sorority sister. After graduating she worked as a hospital dietetics intern at the Charity Hospital in New Orleans. There she met her husband, Desmond Johnson. After marrying in Iowa, they moved to Cambridge, Ma.where she was staff dietitian at Mt. Auburn Hospital. Desmond graduated from Harvard in 1950. He was then admitted to the Stanford School of Business in Palo Alto, California. Cathy and Desmond loved Palo Alto. And the friendships they established lasted their lifetimes. The very modest Palo Alto Yacht Club was a focus of their social life for several years. While Desmond was establishing himself in the world of Santa Clara county real estate, Cathy worked as a staff dietitian at San Jose Hospital. During the subsequent years they had two sons Ford in 1953 and Todd in 1956. After her parent’s death she and her sister Ruth co-managed a family owned farm in Tipton, Iowa. Each summer the two women and their children would take the California Zephyr to Iowa for a visit. She and Desmond separated in the 1970’s. Returning to Iowa, she bought a house near the University of Iowa Campus and become active in the Methodist Church. Including singing in the choir. It was during this period her passions extended to the “Volksporting Walking Club” and the Hawkeye Hikers. With over 457 10k walks under her belt, including at least one in every state, she didn’t let the moss grow on her heels. Her dedication to promoting public transportation shifted to the state and national level. She was recognized for her work by the Iowa Railroad Association and the National Association of Rail Passengers, Eventually Iowa winters got to be too much, so at 80 she returned to California. She lived the rest of her life at the Terraces of Los Gatos where she could be close to her son’s and their families. Catherine Johnson is survived by her sister Ruth and niece Moira, her sons Ford and Todd Johnson and their families including great granddaughter Siena Johnson. As well as a yet unnamed great grandchild underway.
